Morris, John ( - )

Jockey (J)

Also Known As:  Jack Morris

Description:

Not too much is known about the jockey John Morris, sometimes known as Jack. He rode the filly Cecilia, from Mathew Dawson's second string, to victory in the 1000 Guineas on the first occasion that that Classic was run over the Rowley Mile (it had previously been contested over the Ditch Mile course).

Morris was hard of hearing and rode the Derby amidst shouts of 'Go on deafie!'. Unpeturbed he steered Galopin on the widest and safest of routes to win the contest. When asked why, he replied, 'He'd won his race. I meant to keep him out of danger.'

Poor John Morris died some years later, penniless and forgotten, in a cellar. Had Galopin's owner, Prince Gustavus Batthyany, still been alive, his jockey would never have been in such circumstances.

Important successes:

1000 Guineas
Cecilia   1873   (J)
Derby
Galopin   1875   (J)
