Associated Places:  Knowlsey, Lancashire,Stanley Stud and Stable, Newmarket,Plantation Stud, Newmarket,Woodland Stud, Newmarket

Description:

Not only did he breed and own the winners of 20 Classics, but the 17th Earl's horses became in their turn the most influential horses in the stud book to the present day.

The Earl inherited his title in 1908. Heavily moustached, rotund and genial, he held many offices in public life, including Ambassador to France, MP, Postmaster General, Lord Mayor of Liverpool and Secretary of State for War.

Lord Derby kept Hon George Lambton as his Private Trainer at Stanley House when he inherited his title, inviting others to send their horses as well during the First World War. Thomas Weston became his first jockey in 1924, the year of Sansovino's Derby win - the first epnoymous win since the 12th Earl's in 1787. When Lambton became the Earl's racing manager Frank Butters took over the training, until the Earl economised by asking Lambton to take on both roles. Astoundingly, within 12 months of Lambton and Weston's sensational season with Hyperion in 1933, Lord Derby dispensed with the services of both. Lambton was 73 and was perhaps considered by the Earl to be too old for the responsibility; he gave no reason for ending his association with Tommy Weston.

Lord Derby was leading owner seven times and leading breeder on ten occasions. The racing historians John Randall and Tony Morrris rate the Earl as the foremost of the 100 makers of 20th century racing.
