|
|
Trainer (T),
Jockey (J)
Also Known As: Sam Loates
Description:
Sam Loates was a small, short-legged and lightweight jockey - one of four brothers plying their trade. He rode his first winner as a 17 year old and his first of two Derby winners two years later. In 1899, the year which saw an invasion of American jockeys, he was the Champion with 160 winners. That year he won the Gold Cup on Cyllene.
On retirement from the saddle Sam Loates trained for Mr Solomon Joel and had charge of Derby winner Pommern for a time.
