Walters, William ( - )

|
Trainer (T)
Associated Places: Albert House, Newmarket
Description:
One of Lord Rosebery' s many trainers, William Walters had been Head Lad to Mathew Dawson. As a trainer himself he sent out the famous Mentmore mare Chelandry to win the 1000 Guineas and finish second in the Oaks and St Leger. He also trained Velasquez to be runner up in the 2000 Guineas and the Derby, and to win the Eclipse Strakes. The contact with Lord Rosebery was very short-lived, however, and Walters went from Primrose Cottage Stables to Albert House where he trained for 34 years. His best winners there included Niantic, who dead-heated for the Cambridgeshire, and Sir Cosmo, winner of the July Cup.
