Simms, Hebert John (1876 - 1954)

Breeder (B),  Owner (O)

Associated Places:  Nottingham

Description:

Herbert Simms founded the Trowell Hall Stud at Nottingham which he ran as a hobby with his brother Harry, breeding from mares they raced themselves. The family business of farming and public works-contracting helped to fund the fun. The best horses owned or bred by Simms included Merry Minstrel (7 races, unplaced in Tulyar's Derby but third in the Jersey Stakes, Royal Ascot), Papyrette (Lingfield Autumn Oaks), Gainslaw (Ascot Gold Vase) and Oundle (Cooch Behar Cup, Calcutta).
