Jockey (J)

Also Known As:  Tommy Loates

Associated Places:  Derby

Description:

Born in Derby, Tommy Loates was one of four jockey brothers and probably the best of them. He was apprenticed to Joseph Cannon at Newmarket. Champion three times and rider of a double century in 1893, Loates was a good lightweight, with very good hands. When he won the Derby on Donovan, for which he was a last-minute booking, he went to scale at just 6 1/2 stone.

He died in about 1914.
