Breeder (B),  Owner (O)

Also Known As:  Frederick Arthur Stanley

Associated Places:  Knowsley Stud, Lancashire,Bedford Lodge, Newmarket,Stanley House, Newmarket

The 16th Earl of Derby, an unpretentious and charming man, inherited his title in 1893 and set about re-establishing the family's stud and racing empire. He appointed the Hon George Lambton as trainer, initially at Bedford Lodge (now an hotel) and then at the newly-built Stanley House establishment. In addition to his two Oaks winners, the 16th Earl won the Ebor Handicap with Dingle Bay, one of the first horses to be bought for him, and the Liverpool Cup with a grand stayer, Bridge of Canny. Like many of his family, the Earl combined racing with a political career.

The Derby family has a long association with racing. The 12th Earl held the party at The Oaks, near Epsom, which resulted in the foundation and naming of two classics, The Derby and The Oaks. The 14th Earl owned horses for 21 years and had four Classic winners. The 17th Earl helped his father re-establish the Knowlsey Stud and, after the latter's death, kept on George Lambton as his private trainer. He could boast 20 Classic wins. The 18th Earl was less interested but still had a number of important successes.
