Jockey (J)

Associated Places:  Lambourn

Description:

Frederick Allsopp served his apprenticeship with Lambourn trainer James Humphreys for whom he won the 1896 Ebor Handicap, carrying 6st 7lbs. Although never Champion Jockey and not as a rule on big race winners, Allsopp rode at a boy's weight and had plenty of mounts. He won the 1892 Derby on 40/1 outsider Sir Hugo. The hot favourite for this race was the wonder filly La Fleche, whose jockey did not have his wits about him that day.
