Lane, William (1883 - 1920)

Description:

Son of a Chelsea jobmaster, William Lane was Champion Jockey in 1902 and enjoyed a wonderful partnership with the mare Pretty Polly in 1904, That year must have seemed like a dream for Willie Lane as he won the 1000 Guineas, The Oaks, The Coronation Stakes, The Nassau Stakes, the St Leger and the Park Hill Stakes on the brilliant filly. In addition he was successful in the St James's Palace Stakes, Ascot Gold Cup, Norfolk Stakes, Gordon Stakes, Goodwood Cup, Yorkshire Oaks, Gimcrack Stakes and Doncaster Cup. However later that year disaster struck. He suffered a terrible fall in a seller at Lingfield which ended his career as a jockey.
