Gilpin, Peter Valentine Purcell (1858 - 1928)

Trainer (T)

Associated Places:  Clarehaven Stables, Newmarket; Dollanstown Stud, Ireland

Description:

Peter Gilpin was twice champion trainer, in 1904 and 1915, and in addition to the wonder mare Pretty Polly and Spearmint, winner of the Derby, he prepared Comrade, a colt who had cost only 25 guineas, to win the Grand Prix de Paris and the first running of the Arc de Triomphe. Peter Gilpin built the Clarehaven Stables at Newmarket on the betting proceeds of his filly Clarehaven, who won the Cesarwitch Handicap of 1900. He died at his home in Ireland, Dollanstown Stud.
