Owner (O)

Also Known As:  Spencer Compton

Associated Places:  Chatsworth, Derbyshire

Description:

The 8th Duke of Devonshire entered Parliament in 1857 and became a leading light in the world of politics, holding many offices including Chief Secretary for Ireland, First Lord of the Admiralty, Secretary of State for War and President of the Board of Education. The Duke could certainly have become Prime Minister had he wished, but he saw his politics as a rather onerous social duty and really preferred horseracing. Nevertheless time did not allow for more than a minor participation.

The Duke's Classic success with Belphoebe came in 1877, when as the Marquess of Hartington he had yet to inherit his title (the 8th Duke died in 1891). His other good horses included Cheers, the 20/1 winner of the Eclipse Stakes; Dieudonne, Middle Park Stakes, Sussex Stakes; Marvel, two Stewards Cups; and Morion, Royal Hunt Cup.
