Joel, Solomon Barnato (1865 - 1931)

Breeder (B),  Owner (O)

Also Known As:  Solly Joel

Associated Places:  Moulton Paddocks, Newmarket

Description:

Solly Joel did not enjoy the measure of success on the turf which fell to his brother Jack Joel (winner of 11 Classics), in spite of spending freely in an effort to do so. Pommern was his only Classic winner, the horse being home-bred and by Mr Joel's own stallion, Polymelus. Solly Joel earned a fortune in diamond mines in South Africa and eventually became head of the family firm Barnato Brothers. Other good horses owned by the entrepreneur included Bachelor's Button, who beat the great mare Pretty Polly in the Ascot Gold Cup, and Kopi, winner of the Irish Derby.
