Jockey (J)

Description:

Born in Suffolk, George Barrett was apprenticed to W H Manser at Newmarket and rode 3 winners at 14 years of age. He could be a strong and dashing rider but could also ride some diabolical races - none more so that in the Derby on La Fleche, where, despising her opponents, he allowed her to lay well back out of her ground, so that although she should have won on merit, the filly was only runner up. In 1891 Barrett won the 2000 Guineas, St Leger and Derby on Common, despite an erratic ride in the St Leger. He made wise investments and died very well off.
