Cottrill, Harry Lawson (1882 - 1955)

Trainer (T)

Associated Places:  Cheshire,Seven Barrows, Lambourn

Harry Cottrill, born in Cheshire, never took life too seriously, and as a young man hunted and point-to-pointed, financing his pleasures with periods of horse-dealing. He commenced training with a few jumpers and took out a flat licence in 1915, moving to Lambourn at the end of the war. His early patron and backer, Jimmy White, gave him success in many important handicaps, including the Lincoln, Manchester Cup and Cesarewitch.

Irish Elegance, a wonderful weight-carrying handicapper, won the July and Royal Hunt Cups and was a great favourite with the public. Harry Cottrill also trained for other high profile owners including Col Charles Sofer Whitburn, for whom he won the 2000 Guineas, and Sir Abe Bailey (Oaks). He retired in 1943.
