Maher, Daniel Aloysius (1881 - 1916)

Danny Maher rode in Great Britain for 15 seasons, being Champion Jockey in 1908 and 1913. Born in Connecticut, he commenced his career at the age of 14, weighing 4st 9lbs. Three years later he topped the jockey's list in America. Maher came to Europe in 1900 (now at least 8 st) and became a British Citizen in 1913. Here he rode for Lord Rosebery, Mr Alfred Cox, Lord Derby and Mr de Rothschild, amongst others. Unfortunately years of wasting led to consumption and he died at the early age of 35. Lord Rosebery arranged his funeral. He is buried in Paddington Cemetery.
