Martin, John Henry (1875 - 1944)

Jockey (J)

Also Known As:  Skeets Martin

Description:

John Henry Martin, known in racing circles as 'Skeets Martin', was born in New York and, after early success in America, came to England at the age of 24. Skeets Martin had very good hands and was the ideal pilot for a 2 year-old horse. His best season was 1902, when he had 80 wins, including the Derby. He fell upon hard times in his retirement due to disastrous property speculation. Fellow jockeys sent funds to help with his upkeep but World War II prevented the money from reaching Skeets in his final years abroad, and he died penniless in a Swiss nursing home.
