Description:
Winner of 9 of his 11 starts at 2 and 3 years, Flying Fox had a wonderful constitution, very deep through the heart, with beautiful shoulders. His future trainer, John Porter, inspected all the yearlings at the Duke of Westminster's Eaton Stud in 1897 and exclaimed on seeing Flying Fox, "Here is the winner of the Derby". And he won not only the Derby but the other two legs of the Triple Crown as well, in all cases with Mornington Cannon (Herbert Cannon up. He was a short priced favourite on each occasion. On the death of his owner, Flying Fox was sold to France for 37,500 guineas and was a successful sire there.
The photograph shows Flying Fox in hard training, with his ribs clearly showing. |
