Description:

Canterbury Pilgrim was bought as a yearling on behalf of the 16th Earl of Derby. After an indifferent non-winning two-year-old campaign this small, gassy hard-mouthed filly improved out of sight during the winter. Her sire, Tristan, had an evil temper and so did she. Thanks to a quiet old gelding called Flare Up, who accompanied her everywhere, her trainer Hon George Lambton was able to humour and train her. Canterbury Pilgrim won 4 races as a 3 year old, including the Oaks and the Jockey Club Cup, by 15 lengths. She bred 10 live foals, with two very good ones in Chaucer and Swynford.

This photograph shows the filly in training.
