Description:

Ard Patrick, the winner of six races, was half brother to the 1897 Derby winner Galtee More. Their dam was a selling plater with a wind infirmity. Ard Patrick's 1902 Derby win was gained with ease, but the Eclipse Stakes was a hard-fought contest in which Ard Patrick beat the Triple Crown winner of that year, Rock Sand, 2 furlongs out. There followed a great battle betwen the two four year olds, Ard Patrick and Sceptre. At the last minute Ard Patrick forced his head in front at the line, to win by a neck. Many considered the race the most breathtaking they had ever seen. Ard Patrick did not race again, as his leg went. He became a successful sire in Germany.
