Description:
Solario, a strong, well-made and handsome colt, was bought as a yearling for a bargain 3,500 guineas by Sir John Rutherford. He won one of his three starts as a juvenile and was almost cut. However, he really came into his own at three, finishing fourth in the season's first two Classics. This late developer then won at Ascot and Newmarket before cantering home in the St Leger. As a 4-y-o he took the Coronation Cup by a staggering 15 lengths and the Gold Cup at Royal Ascot. Sir John refused offers of £75,000 and then £100,000 for the colt, but after his owner died in 1932 Solario fetched 47,000gns at public auction, a record for those days. As he had been a champion on the racecourse, so he became a champion at stud, siring the Derby winners Mid-Day Sun and Straight Deal, and also Exhibitionnist, winner of the 1000 Guineas and Oaks. |
