Signorinetta was one of the most remarkable Derby winners in the long history of the race, She was bred, owned and trained by Cavaliere Edoardo Ginistrelli, who had come to England from Italy with his head in the clouds. 'Pull the other one' was the reaction of the crowd when advised that she had a chance in the Derby - but she won it, in a canter, at odds of 100 to 1.

Signorinetta's dam, who had been a good race mare in her day, had not produced a live foal for 10 consecutive seasons, befpore foaling Signorino, a half-decent colt who was third in the Derby. But she had taken a fancy to Chaleureux, a 9gns unfashionable stallion, who neighed to her each day when he passed on his exercise round. Mr Ginistrelli decided to let love rule the day and Signorinetta was the result. The filly's only success as a two year old was a weak nursery handicap at Newmarket and it was not until her fitness and stamina were brought fully into play over the 12 furlongs of the Derby course that Signorinetta showed her true colours. She displayed them again two days later in the Oaks, after which she never showed winning form again. The photograph shows her with a foal.
