Description:

While this is not a brilliant photograph of Ormonde, it does show his trainer and jockey. This great horse was unbeaten in 16 races over 3 seasons and is cited as the best colt of the 19th century. Ormonde was a strange foal. His dam carried him for 12 instead of the usual 11 months, his mane was fully three inches long and his knees were very bent. When mature he was troubled by splints and became a roarer, but had terrific propelling power. After his magnificent 3 year old season he won the Rous Memorial Stakes, the Hardwicke Stakes and the Imperial Gold Cup, before retiring to stud. Ormonde stood only two seasons in England, siring a good horse in Orme. His owner accepted an offer of £12,000 and he went to Argentina, and thence to the USA, but in neither country was he a great success.
