Description:

Mumtaz Mahal was just about the best 2 year old filly seen in the 20th century. Winner of 7 of her 10 starts, speed was her forte. As a juvenile she was only beaten once in the mud at Kempton Park conceding 7lbs to the winner, but she won her other five starts that season including the Queen Mary Stakes and the Molecomb Stakes by 10 lengths each time. At 3 years she was runner up in the 1000 Guineas - the mile being too far for her - but won the King George Stakes and the Nunthorpe Stakes with consummate ease. She never bred a foal in the same class as herself although Badruddin and Mirza II were very useful, but through her daughters she was granddam of the Derby winner Mahmoud. Woe betide any bullock turned out in the paddock with this mare - she hated them!
