Whitney, William Collins (1841 - 1904)

Description:

William Whitney was the leading owner in America in 1901, the same year in which his leased colt Volodyovski won the Epsom Derby. William was a noted politician and Secretary of the navy in America, and only took up racing at the age of fifty seven. His son, John Hay Whitney, was a subsequent United States Ambassador and owner of the great Steeplechaser Easter Hero.
