Description:

In any normal season, the smart colt Velasquez would have been good enough to take at least two Classics, but he was foaled in the same year as the Triple Crown hero Galtee More who beat him quite comfortably, firstly in the Middle Park Stakes where shocked connections were apt to blame the heavy going and the horse's small feet. The next season he was put in his place by Galtee More in the 2000 Guineas and the Derby. However Velasquez was still considered the best colt Lord Rosebery had owned, and whilst his nine wins did not include a Classic, he was first in the Eclipse Stakes and successful in two runnings of the Champion Stakes.

Velasquez was only a moderate success at stud although his daughter Valve bred the 1000 Guineas winner Vaclause. Towards the end of his days the horse became completely blind, and he was destroyed in 1906.
