Dates & jockeys of important wins:
Description:
A handsome colt endowed with great courage, Sunstar, who had already won the 2000 Guineas, became extremely lame on the dry Wantage gallops eight days before the Derby. His skilful trainer Charles Morton managed to patch him up with a treatment which included wrapping cabbage leaves round his legs, but warned that if he managed to get to Epsom he wopuld never race again afterwards. And indeed, Sunstar cantered to the post sound but returned barely able to walk but victorious.
On breeding Sunstar was an unlikely horse to win the Derby. He was by Sundridge, a sprinter who started in selling plates, out of pony-sized Doris who had never had any pretentions above racing in selling plates. After the Derby he retired to the Childwick Bury Stud of his owner where he got high class winnersincluding Sunny Jane (Oaks) and Craig an Eran (2000 Guineas). He was Champion Broodmare Sire on two occasions. |
