Description:
Son and Heir was bred to win a Classic. He was bought as a late foal for 5000 guineas by Sir Abe Bailey who had campaigned his sire. However he did not win any sort of race at 2 or 3 years but ran with credit in the Derby (finished 8th) and was third in Book Law's St Leger at 25/1. Bred as he was, there was every chance he would have gone on to better things, but a serious overreach cut short his career on the racecourse.
Son and Heir retired to stud standing at only 9 guineas and even covered winners and dams of winners for free. He died young, but left behind Robin Goodfellow (5 races, second in the Derby), Canteener (Irish 2000 Guineas), Duplicate (Ascot Gold Vase) and Our Hope (8 flat races and 10 races over hurdles including the Champion Hurdle of 1938, ridden by the amateur Peregrine Harding). |
