Description:

Atty Persse said of his sprinter Portlaw, 'he's a curious horse to train as he requires less work than any horse I have ever had anything to do with. He can get seven furlongs if there is nothing to stretch him in the first ... at five he is a SMASHER'. Portlaw, joint-champion two-year-old of his generation, won 9 races at 2 and 3 years. He did not have the stamina for the 2000 Guineas. At stud he sired many speedy sorts and some good broodmares.
