Rosebery (5th Earl of) (1847 - 1929)
|
|
Breeder (B),
Owner (O)
Also Known As: Archibald Philip Primrose; Lord Dalmeny
Associated Places: The Durdans, near Epsom; Mentmore, nr Leighton Buzzard, Bedfordshire;
Description:
Archibald Primrose became Lord Dalmeny when his father died in 1851, and as a young man he apparently boasted that he would marry the richest woman in England, become Prime Minister and own a Derby winner; he succeeded in all three.
In 1868, the year that he became Earl, Archibald acquired a two-year old racehorse, and as a result was sent down from Oxford. He was elected to the Jockey Club in 1870 and achieved his first aim by marrying Hannah, daughter of Baron Meyer de Rothschild, and thus acquiring the Mentmore Stud near Leighton Buzzard, Bedfordshire.
In 1894 Ladas won the Derby and 2000 Guineas for Lord Rosebery, who was Prime Minister at the time. He won the race again with Sir Visto the following year and with Cicero in 1905.
Despite numerous Classic successes in his colours of primrose, rose hoops and rose cap, Lord Rosebery did not enjoy going racing and was far more interested in breeding.
