Description:

Aristedes Welch was a millionaire stock raiser of Pennsylvania who bought Leamington, a sire imported from England. The horse sired Welch's name-sake, a small chesnut colt called Aristedes, who won the first ever Kentucky Derby when he was meant to be acting as a pacemaker! Welch also bred Iroquois, Harold (own brother to Iroquois and winner of the Preakness Stakes), Panique (Belmont Stakes), and Saunterer (who won both the Preakness and Belmont Stakes in 1879).
