Owner (O)

Associated Places:  Tuxedo Park, Orange County, NY

Description:

Son of a Frenchman who emigrated to America and became a tobacco millionaire, Pierre Lorilland was the owner of Iroquois, the first colt bred in the USA to win the Epsom Derby. Other good winners owned by him in England included Paw Paw (Molecombe Stakes), Chinook (Nassau Stakes), and, in partnership with but running in Lord Marcus Beresford's name, Sibola, winner of the Oaks.

The Lorillard family also influenced fashion. Gentlemen's dress at formal occasions at his home, Tuxedo Park, lent its name to the Tux worn at countless events since then.
