Description:
Gentle Shepherd may seem an obscure horse to chronicle, for he was unraced and made no impact as a sire, but the pages of The Stud Book contain a few animals who had an influence on future generations, of whom he is one and therefore included.
Gentle Shepherd cost James Buchanan (a lucky buyer as a rule) 1850 guineas as a yearling. The colt got away from his lad at exercise as a two-year-old and injured himself so badly that he could not be trained. He was sold for a small sum as a three-year-old to trainer Ronald Farquharson, who stood him at his Tileshead Lodge Stud in Wiltshire for a fee of only 9 guineas. The horse sired a few winners, amongst them a filly called Shepherdess, bred by Mr Farquharson, and successful in three little races. She bred winners including Truckle, herself dam of some good ones including Combined Operations (a grand character with a hogged mane, winner of 10 races at home and in India including the Diadem Stakes). Another of Shepherdess's daughters was Rural Lass, a juvenile winner for Frederick Darling and the great granddam of Clover Bud, a champion point-to-pointer and winner of the Welsh Grand National, whose son Go Ballistic so nearly won the Cheltenham Gold Cup. |
