Description:

Born Anastasia Michaelovna de Torby, daughter of His Imperial Highness the Grand Duke Michael of Russia and a great-granddaughter of Czar Nicholas I, Lady Zia was married in 1917 to the millionaire industrialist Sir Harold Wernher. Her first horse to win was a handicap hurdler, Noir, successful at Warwick in 1925. Two years later with her animals under the care of Cecil Boyd-Rochfort, her trainer bought for her the filly to be known as Double Life, a future Cambridgeshire winner, and, more importantly, a great foundation mare and ancestress of Lady Wernher's Triple Crown winning Meld and her Derby-winning colt, Charlottown.
