Description:
Winner of five races including his sole two-year-old outing, the 2000 Guineas and Derby at three and the Champion Stakes as a four-year-old, Cameronian was a colt showing exceptional quality and was campaigned by the nephew of his breeder and trained by Frederick Darling. The colt was all the rage for the St Leger, having taken the first two Classics with the minimum of fuss, but finished stone cold last in the race. He had been over-excited and ran himself into the ground after fighting for his head most of the way. It took a long time to get him right and it was not until the Champion Stakes that he reclaimed his brilliance.
Cameronian sired the St Leger winner Scottish Union, but was allowed to go to Argentina after eight seasons at stud in this country. |
