Description:
Like a few others, Black Cherry features in this website because of her influence as a mare rather than due to her racing record. She did win one small race, a £100 selling plate at Thirsk as a two-year-old, but her fame rests on her production of nine winners of 41 races, including Cherry Lass (1000 Guineas and Oaks), Jean's Folly (a leading Irish juvenile and dam of Night Hawk, the St Leger winner) and the maiden Blanche, dam of the influential sire Blandford. Sun Chariot, Carrozza and Santa Claus were all descended from her.
A half-sister of Bay Ronald, after two years at stud she was bought by Mr W Hall-Walker (later 1st Lord Wavertree), for whom these winners were produced. Her influence would have been even greater had not some members of her family been confiscated by the Germans from the Aga Khan's studs in France; they were never recovered. |
