Miller, James Percy (Sir) (1864 - 1906)

Breeder (B),  Owner (O)

Also Known As:  Sir James Miller, 2nd Baronet

Associated Places:  Hamilton Stud, Newmarket

Description:

Sir James Miller suceeded to his title in 1887, his father, the 1st Baronet, having sat as M P for Leith & Berwickshire. As a young officer in the 14th Hussars he took a fancy to a colt owned by Sir Robert Jardine and trainer John Porter and bought him for £6,000. This was the Derby winner Sainfoin who later stood at his owner's Hamilton Stud, where he was sire of Sir James' Triple Crown winner Rock Sand. The Cesarewitch winner Chaleureux also stood here. He neighed to the mare Signorina each day out at exercise, prompting her owner to mate them. The result was the Derby winner Signorinetta. Miller was a Steward of the Jockey Club.
