Lewis, Thomas (1850 - 1938)

Trainer (T)

Also Known As:  Tom Lewis

Associated Places:  Druid's Lodge, Wiltshire,Netheravon, Wiltshire

Description:

Trainer of one of the most controversial Derby winners in the history of the race - Aboyeur - Tom Lewis came from County Down in Ireland and trained there before setting up in a small way at Netheravon in Wiltshire. From here he sent out Comedy to win the Cambridgeshire Handicap of 1891 and Laodamia, Doncaster Cup 1896.

Lewis was installed as the trainer at Druid's Lodge in 1906. Amongst the winners he produced were Christmas Daisy, successful in the Cambridgeshire two years running, and Lally, an in-and-out achiever who won the Eclipse Stakes in 1907. But of course, the highlight of his career was the Derby victory awarded to Aboyeur after a stewards' enquiry, following an extremely rough race in 1913.
