Piper, Edwin (1888 - 1951)

Jockey (J)

Description:

Born in Exeter, Edwin Piper started his career with horses by riding in the show ring. He was never a fashionable jockey and his best win before the Derby of 1913 had been the Chester Vase and the Jubilee Handicap at Kempton Park. He only came in for the ride on Aboyeur in the Derby when his booked mount, Knight's Key, was scratched. Aboyeur led most of the way but hung into Craganour when this horse challenged, a move compounded by Edwin Piper's left-handed whipping. Therefore at the subsequent stewards' enquiry the jockey expected a roasting but was instead handed racing's richest prize.
