Cunliffe, Alan Percy ( - 1942)

Description:

Alan Cunliffe was the founder of the Druid's Lodge stable in Wiltshire and he and his partners became known as the Druid's Lodge Confederacy, running a secretive establishment and bringing off many a betting coup. He owned his first flat race winner in 1898 and in addition to his two Classic horses, his best animal was Charles O'Malley, third in the Derby and winner of the Ascot Gold Cup.

Cunliffe was over 6ft tall and had been educated at Eton. His brother was governor of The Bank of England. He owned much of the land on Salisbury Plain which he rented to the army for manoeuvres.
