McGregor, Sydney (1890 - 1970)

Breeder (B)

Description:

Sydney McGregor had a small stud at Leamington Spa in Warwickshire where, for a time he stood the 2000 Guineas winner Craig An Eran as a stallion. With a very moderate mare, Sold Again, he sired a colt who went on to win the 1932 Derby. The foal was born on April the Fifth, which was also Mr McGregor's birthday, hence his name. April the Fifth went into training with Tom Walls at his own expense whilst sharing the stake money.

Sydney McGregor was well known in Warwickshire hunting circles and he bought some promising horses, including Big Wonder, runner-up in the National Hunt Chase in 1928. From an April the Fifth mare he bred Gladness, winner of the Ascot Gold Cup, and Woodlander (out of an April the Fifth mare), dam of the Cheltenham Gold Cup winner of 1967, Woodland Venture.
