Walter Raphael, an extremely rich London financier, won four Classics with his horses, and on two other occasions his runners finished a close second in the Derby. Walter Raphael employed several trainers and other successes in his colours included Sanctum, who won the Cesarewitch and who, in the opinion of his trainer 'Atty' Henry Persse was the best stayer he ever sent out; Allenby (the son of Tagalie), St James's Palace Stakes, and Waygood , Irish Derby.
