Born in Malton, Yorkshire, Alfred Hayhoe assisted trainer John Scott when he was a young man. His horses were sent out fully fit and on the lean side, and were always ready to do themselves justice if they could stand the preparation.

Alfred Hayhoe's daughter married Thomas Waugh Snr and was the mother of Jack Waugh and Thomas Waugh Jnr.
