Description:

Lettice Mary was the daughter of Major A W Talbot of Gloucestershire. Three years after she married Mr George Butt Miller, the director of an aircraft company, and whilst still in her 20s, she and her mother met Frederick Butters when they rented a house next to his Newmarket stable. Butters obtained the colt Mid-day Sun for them from his breeder when he failed to reach his reserve at the sales. Merely useful at two, he became an improving three year and went on to win the Derby. It was the first win for a lady's horse on the Epsom course (Gainsborough had won the substitute held at Newmarket).
