Also Known As:  Farmer Higgs

Associated Places:  Blacklands Stud, Wiltshire

Description:

William Higgs was Champion Jockey on two occasions. For a number of seasons in his heyday he was the first jockey for the Beckhampton stable of Samuel Darling Snr. He won the 2000 Guineas on Slieve Gallion, but although hot favourite for the Derby the colt did not stay the trip and finished third. In 1911 he partnered the stable's remarkable Willonyx to win the Chester, Ascot and Jockey Club Cups and the Cesarewitch.

William Higgs later trained and developed a stud, but it is as a jockey that he is remembered.
