Larnach, James Walter (1849 - 1919)

Breeder (B),  Owner (O)

Also Known As:  Mr Eton

Associated Places:  Lanwades Estate, Newmarket,Meddler Stud, Newmarket

Description:

From his days at Cambridge, James Larnach took an interest in racing. At first his involvement was with steeplechasers but later he turned to the flat, his horses initially running under the assumed name of Mr Eton. In 1894 he bought an aged mare, the 1000 Guineas winner Pilgrimage. It was beleived she was barren and thus unlikely to breed again, so the price was only 160 guineas. The next spring a large ungainly foal was produced, the future Derby winner Jeddah.

James Larnach owned land in Newmarket including the Lanwades Estate and the Meddler Stud, but his home was in Sussex.
