Elsey, Charles Frederick (Capt) (1882 - 1966)

Trainer (T)

Associated Places:  Highfield Stables, Malton, E Yorks

Description:

Charles Elsey was born in Lincolnshire where his father was friendly with the breeder of Galopin. His elder brother became a bishop, but Charles assisted his father William Edward Elsey at first and then started to train in his own right in 1911. His Classic wins did not include the Derby, a race Nearula might have won but for lameness. He was Champion trainer in 1956, but could always be relied upon to send out plenty of winners, especially stayers.

Captain Elsey (who was decorated with the MC during the first world war) retired in 1960, handing over his Highfield Stable to his son Charles William Carlton Elsey.
