Description:

Winner of 17 races, Springfield (who looks very old in this photograph) was, in his prime, the most beautiful horse and powerfully built. Speed was his forte and he won the first two runnings of the July Cup. He also managed to beat the Derby winner Silvio in the Champion Stakes at Newmarket. He got a colt at stud who stayed better than he did - this was Sainfoin, winner of the Derby in 1890.
