Description:
April the Fifth made a fairytale come true for his amateur owner/trainer, the theatre impresario Tom Walls, by winning the Derby of 1932. The horse had already scored in the first running of the Derby trial at Lingfield but still the colt was allowed to start at odds of 100/6 at Epsom, because no-one took an amateur showbusiness trainer seriously! In fact, the colt won impressively, but never ran again after injuring a knee and failing in the St Leger.
At stud he was not a success, although he proved a good sire of jumpers.
The photograph shows April the Fifth with owner Tom Walls and Frederick Lane in the saddle. |
