Westminster (1st Duke of) (1825 - 1899)
|
|
Breeder (B),
Owner (O)
Also Known As: Hugh Lupus Grosvenor
Associated Places: Eaton Stud, Chester
Description:
Tall, unbending and sparing of his undoubted charms, the 1st Duke of Westminster was the richest man in England in his day. He had a comprehesive knowledge of racing and breeding and was the only man to have been owner/breeder of two winners of the Triple Crown. He also bred the great mare Sceptre who came up for sale as a yearling after his death.
The Dukes horses were trained by Robert Peck, and, after his retirement, by John Porter at Kingsclere. Porter prepared Shotover and Ormonde, the latter the Duke's best horse.
The Duke won the 1881 2000 Guineas with Peregrine, but under the name of Mr Grosvenor due to his wife's death. His 1880 Derby win was questioned on the grounds that Bend Or had been confused in the stud with another horse named Tadcaster; the objection was over-ruled but the groom who had given evidence swore that it was true on his deathbed.
